Το Μπαλέτο εμφανίστηκε στα τέλη του 15 αιώνα στην Αναγέννηση της Ιταλίας,ως ερμηνεία του χορού της ξιφασκίας, και αναπτύχθηκε περαιτέρω στη Γαλλία στην εποχή του Louis XIV τον 17 ο αιώνα. Αυτό αντικατοπτρίζεται στο γαλλικό λεξιλόγιο του μπαλέτου. Στη συνέχεια, μετά το 1850, το μπαλέτο άκμασε στη Δανία και τη Ρωσία .Από την Ρωσία επέστρεψε στην Δυτική Ευρώπη και στη συνέχεια εξαπλώθηκε σε όλο τον κόσμο. Τα Ballets Russes του Sergei Diaghilev και των διαδόχων του, ασκούσαν ιδιαίτερη επιρροή κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου. Στη συνέχεια επηρεάστηκε και επηρέασε τους παραδοσιακούς ρωσικούς χορούς
